Box-lunch Haginoya
Now, Deliverly only(require resavation at least one day ahead)
“Haginoya,” or shojin-ryori bento box lunches, are now available on the Shinkansesn (bullet train) platforms at Kyoto Station.
Onigiri rice-balls made with cured plum (ume), seaweed (kombu), pickled vegetables with chili (takana), fried tofu stuffed with vinagered rice (inari sushi), cucumber roll (kyuri maki) or natto (fermented soybeans) are the easiest vegetarian food to find at a convenience store. But for a train trip, it is nice to have a real vegetarian box-lunch for a change.
Recently, I found a "Shojin” (vegetarian) box-lunch for 1000 yen at the Shinkansen platform at Kyoto Station! This is a genuine "vegetarian” lunch.
The portion of rice is a little on the small side, but there is a variety of vegetarian food, and it’s perfectly adequate for a satisfying midday meal. The sesame tofu was especially tasty, and the portion generous. My only complaint was that it was a bit on the salty side.
You may buy this box-lunch not only on the Shinkansen platforms, but on other JR platforms, as well as at the Kyoto Tower Building (opposite Kyoto Station). Home delivery is also available.
