Reading Terminal Market

READING TERMINAL MARKET (PHILADELPHIA)

_Dennis_collection_of_stereoscopic_views1893年、レディング鉄道の開通と同時にそれまでの屋外マーケットが引っ越して開設された北米最古の公設市場。

Just after Christmas, we visited America for about a week. This entry doesn't concern any Kyoto eateries, obviously, but I offer it here as a recommendation for anyone who travels to Philadelphia; it is worth putting this one your itinerary.

In 1893, the Reading Railroad opened this terminal building, and took in as a tenant one of the oldest open-air markets in America. The building stands near city hall, Independence Hall, and the site where the Liberty Bell is housed.

Since the closure of the Reading Railroad, the building has been given over entirely to the market, and a new convention center has replaced the old rail-yards. The market is some 5,000 square meters in size.

On offer in the many stalls and shops is nearly every sort of food imaginable, fresh produce, specialty cheeses, handicrafts, flowers, and many another thing besides. The better part of the floor-space is given over to take-out food stalls, which offer cuisines from all over the world: Japanese, Pakistani, Greek, Amish, and so on.

The prices here are relatively cheap, and you can eat your take-out food in a large seating area in the center of the market. The place bustles with people, no matter what the hour.

First, we headed for the "Basic 4 Vegan" stall, owned by a Chinese-American cook. They sell salads, vegan "hamburgers," and vegan sweets, too. The staff recommended that we try their vegetarian "hoagie" (a kind of "sub" sandwich), which the menu described as a vegetarian alternative to the famous Philadelphia "cheese steak" sandwich.

This vegetarian "hoagie" is about 20 centimeters long, and the vegetarian "steak" is made from a special sort of gluten, and might well pass, in appearance anyway, for ground beef.

It may not look very appetizing, but one bite will disabuse you of that notion: it is very tasty indeed, and though it is large, it has a lightness that allows you to gobble it up. The "cheese" in this vegan "cheese steak" is made from soy, so no dairy products are used in the preparation.

Next we stepped over to Nanee's Kitchen, a Pakistani/Indian cafe. Nanee's is not strictly vegetarian, but there are a number of vegetarian items on the menu.

There are curries, chana masala, vegetable dishes, and vegetarian samosas (one of these latter is big enough for two, as it is twice the size of the samosas you might expect to find in Japan). We did not have time to sample the fare at the various Mediterranean shops.
