Zen

10 grain rice

This small Korean cafe stands across the street from Kitano-tenmangu Shrine (the one renowned for its monthly open-air market, about which many tourists read in their guidebooks).

"Rak-zen," as the cafe is called, accommodates about twenty. Seating arrangements are divided equally between traditional Korean floor-seating and western-style tables.

The cuisine is not simply Korean; it is based on a special kind of Korean cuisine known for its medicinal and health benefits. On the menu you'll find rice cooked inside of a "cup" made out of a section of blue bamboo, which imparts to the rice a distinctive color and aroma and is considered beneficial to the health(900yen). (Incidentally, tens of thousands of people in Japan became acquainted with this style of cooking rice through a popular Korean TV drama broadcast nationwide.) On the menu also are a vegetarian bi-bim-bap(850yen), several kinds of porridges, and a soy-bean soup. The menu offers explanations of the medicinal properties of the food and, though there are some dishes that include meat, you will not find here what many may expect to find at a Korean restaurant: barbecued meat (or "yaki-niku," as the Japanese would call it). On the whole, the menu is vegetarian friendly and organic (no chemical additives, etc.).

pickled saladAs for beverages, the menu lists some ten different kinds of Korean herbal teas and juices, along with some alcoholic beverages supposed to offer health benefits. Of course, you'll find coffee here, and also ice-cream; you might drop in simply for tea or coffee and refreshment, if you haven't the time or hunger for a proper lunch or dinner.

We ordered the ten-grain, "stone-pot" rice set (the stone rice-pot came piping hot and sizzling:1000yen), and also the vegetarian bi-bim-bap. The servings were generous, larger than we expected. A soup made from bean-sprouts comes standard with every order. Side dishes for the ten-grain rice set included kim-chee (100% vegetarian, which is to say made without fish sauce), and also tofu. The stone-pot "ten-grained" rice itself includes white rice, sticky rice, brown rice, black rice, ginkgo nuts, chestnuts, pine nuts, Korean-grown ginseng, millet, barley, as well as other ingredients. Salt is the only seasoning used in preparing it. But accompanying the rice is chili-oil with scallions, which complements the dish very well.

The bi-bim-bap includes a poached egg, Korean-style marinated vegetables atop rice; on the side is a spicy condiment made of miso (called "kochi-jang" in Korean).

The appetizer was a simple dish made from burdock root seasoned with sesame. The underlying concept of the cuisine is to improve stamina and to refresh the tired and weary.

The cafe does not close between the lunch and dinner hours, so you can drop in anytime the cafe is open (from 10 AM to 8 PM). Prices are very reasonable.

Somushi tea house

The Somushi Tea House is a sort of "mountain villa" located in the city. The restaurant stands in central Kyoto, but the entrance is covered by a canopy of greenery, giving the aura of a place somewhere out in the mountain suburbs of Kyoto.

This Tea House is a combination art gallery & cafe, with cuisine based on medicinal herbs. The atmosphere inside the cafe is relaxed; you will feel as if time, in some sense, stops.

The cafe is furnished with lovely antiques and objets d'art, and artists often stage exhibitions here. On the counter stood a tea-pot unearthed at an archaeological site in South America; its precise age is unknown, but it is at least four centuries old, and quite possibly older.

The table tops here are fashioned from wood salvaged from old ships, and they are indeed very thick and heavy. You'll also find, used as curtains, and hanging from the ceiling, patchwork quilts made by the owner, who is Korean and an artist who works with special dyes derived from persimmons.

The menu, for the most part, features special herbal teas, made from ginseng, yuzu, jujube, etc. The sheer variety makes it hard to choose just one. As for the food, it, too, is derived from a special Korean cuisine based upon medicinal herbs, fruits, and vegetables.

Vegetarians can choose from two set menus: one is built around special rice-porridges, the other is a vegetarian bibimbap.

I choose a set featuring the pumpkin porridge; the portion is relatively small, but the texture was as smooth as cream and it was delicious. This set menu also included sea-weed, burdock, ume-boshi, and a Korean dessert made from mildly sweetened rice.

The set menus are made in limited quantities, so I recommend that you go there for lunch (by dinner-time some may be gone). The cafe is open from 11 AM to 9 PM.

The menu is written in both English and Japanese, and it describes the medicinal purposes of the several dishes and teas on offer. Many foreign tourists drop in, because the cafe is featured in an English-language magazine published here in Japan.
