Shizuhara village Cafe Millet
A VEGAN CAFE IN THE COUNTRYSIDE:
Shizuhara village is renowned for its fields of cosmos flowers. The village lies between Kurama and Ohara, but is not so far from the city of Kyoto.
The cafe is open only on weekends (Saturdays and Sundays) and on national holidays, and only for lunch. (They may open week day now, since they started organizing a lot of events on weekends. Please try to make booking!) Reservations are required, and public transportation is somewhat less than convenient to reach Cafe Millet, so you cannot go on the spur of the moment. But finally I managed to make it out there.
The cafe stands a few minutes' walk toward Ohara beyond the terminus of bus #34 (Shiroyama bus-stop), which departs from Demachiyanagi Station. The day I went, we were greeted by a friendly Dalmation and a miniature Dachsund.
The fare is by course menu only, 2,500 yen per person. The cuisine is strictly vegan (no dairy, no egg, not even white sugar). All the vegetables come from local organic farms.
The spacious dining room, which could seat as many as 30 people, doubles as an art gallery. The owner's father is himself an artist. The atmosphere is cozy and comfortable, featuring antique furniture (tables, chairs, and even an old pedal-pumped organ); windows fill the room with light, and beyond them lies a peaceful rural scene of fields and hills.
I started with three appetizers. Then came pumpkin/carrot soup with homemade, natural yeast bread. Next I was served a course of grilled seasonal vegetables, followed by the main dish: a patty made from millet, topped with a sauce, and accompanied by fried konnyaku.
You will feel quite satisfied and full when finished, but nonetheless you'll find that you still have an appetite for their dessert (in this case, a homemade pound cake with a "nashi," or pear, compote). After this, you may choose either tea or fresh ground coffee. The experience was as delightful as it was delicious.
The cafe, as I implied earlier, lies along the main hiking route from Ohara to Kurama. Check the timetable for the bus to ensure that you do not miss it for the return trip to Kyoto.
But the cafe is a mere four kilometers from Ohara, and three from Kurama. So, a short hike would be a nice way to finish off the day. Every Sunday there is a farmer's market near Shizuhara Elementary school, where you can buy freshly harvested local produce.
Just outside the cafe stands a large clay/brick oven for baking bread. Occasionally they offer workshops on how to bake bread, build tree-houses, and other such things. The cafe is a perfect holiday hideaway.
